Chapter 18: Models for Nonideal Reactors

Example 18.1: Finding a two parameter model

The following F curve was obtained from a tracer test on a real reactor

Suggest a model consistent with the F curve.

(a)  What are the model parameters a and b?

(b)  What is the overall conversion for the second order reaction with CA0 = 2 mol/dm3 and k1 CA0 = 0.1 min–1?

Solution

The F curve is consistent with a step input.

step tracer balance on CSTR gives

      Junction Balance

nb = fraction of fluid that will be in the reactor a time 10 minutes or shorter, therefore nb = 0.33 no

  = t

For a 2nd Order Reaction
