OverPower Web
8 July 1999
Well, it's home from vacation and back to work again, yuck. So, in
what most likely will be a mostly negative post, I'll start off
with something positive. If you haven't heard yet, there's a new
Marvel OverPower promo out just in the past week. It's the Warlock
hero card. I guess Warlock is one the new books coming out in
Marvel's M-Tech line. Here's the front and back of the card (click
on the front of the card to see a full size scan, 156K):
Oh, where to get the goods. The card is in Wizard magazine #96
(Pokeman or Wolverine cover), which got to subscribers last week
and was on newsstands when I checked yesterday (Wednesday). It's
also supposed to be in next month's Inquest magazine #53, so if you
miss it now, be sure to grab it next month. When I went to get the
card, I was looking for a card with the traditional
Spidey/Wolverine Marvel OverPower back, but of course, the back for
Warlock is different. Enjoy.
Now for what I hope is not the beginning of the end, I'll start off
with what I guess is what started the whole slide. Several weeks
ago, Ron Perazza (OverPower's main man since its creation), left
Marvel Interactive for greener pastures with DC. And now, many,
many weeks later, there is still no one who has stepped into his
old role with OverPower. Although I'm glad Ron's on to bigger and
better things, he was one of OverPower's biggest stabilizing
forces. He carried the game from it's inception, through the
transfer from Fleer to Marvel, and back up to it's return last
Fall. So now we get to see if OverPower can survive without him.
And it's not a step in the right direction by dropping the bomb on
this year's Nationals.
But, all is not lost for now. Regionals are still on (mine's this
weekend and I still don't have a team). And though at first they
had cancelled a couple locations, last that I heard was that all
Regionals locations were still set to go, with a Regionals type
tournament being worked on for a replacement of Nationals at San
Diego. I know this is all kind of old news so now on with the
opinions.
I'm excited for the Regionals I'll be participating in this
weekend. After all, it's the first tournament I haven't had to work
that same day since the Image pre-release tourneys. But I have to
wonder if this year is it as far as new OverPower stuff goes. As I
sit back and look at things how they are, once again they don't
seem to be moving too well at OverPower HQ. I don't know if we'll
ever see the Marvels set, and if we do will that be the last set we
see? I still haven't got my "new" membership card (I'm one of the
"old" members who were supposed to receive theirs later; well, I
think later has come and gone, along with my $10), or my Spawn
promo. I have a little brother who was dying to join the Legion, so
he did a couple months back and still hasn't seen anything.
And lastly, each time a new "obstacle" comes up in the saga that is
OverPower, we lose more and more players from frustration and
anger. Has OverPower gained more players than it's lost since the
transition from Fleer? I hope so, but I doubt it. I bring this up
because the guy behind the great West Coast Empire website has
decided to sell his collection and put the WCE website on the back
burner for now. In my opinion, this was one of THE top 2 OP sites
out there (GDMJR'S
OVERPOWER PLACE being the other one). When OverPower loses long
time players like this, things can't be good.
But, I think there's still a small glimmer of hope we can look at.
If someone could step into the shoes left by Ron, and Marvel
Interactive is willing to find that someone, then maybe OverPower
is all right after all. One thing is for sure, I like playing
OverPower. And even if it goes the way of the latest incarnation of
the LA Dodgers, I'll still have my cards, and I'll still be
playing. I guess I'll just sit back, enjoy the Regionals season,
the Warlock promo, and the Mega Power promos (which I hear will
still be available), and wait and see what develops...
And now for my prized possession...
I was one of the lucky few who got the oh so rare, wasn't
supposed to be added, Image Inducer Artifact card in one of my
packs of Classic OverPower. Here's a smaller image of the card.

The Image Inducer requires a 6 Energy and a teammate with a 5
or less in Any Power to use. The effects are: "Teammate may discard
2 cards from top of Draw Pile to Dead Pile to move any attack made
on any Front Line Character onto Character with Image Inducer.
Character may defend." |
