Unix for LinguistsThis web page accompanies the chapter on "The UnixTM Language Family" in Using Computers in Linguistics: A Practical Guide. This chapter takes the form of a language sketch, in the spirit of the sketches in Comrie (ed), The World's Major Languages, treating the Unix operating system and its associated command and programming languages, including regular expressions, filter programs, and aliases and shell scripts, from the point of view of a linguist. Comments are welcomed. You may contact me at jlawler@umich.edu. |
