Friday, November 2, 2001 - Bracket, as in ville32 miles. Del Rio TX to Fort Clark Campground, Bracketville, TX Loaded to the gills with food we left Del Rio for Bracketville, TX (pop. 1,740). It was an easy 32 mile cruise, the terrain easy with the usual average SE headwind, temp about 80*. It is now possible to see that we are finally moving out of the wasteland that is West Texas. The ubiquitous mesquite is taller and occasional real trees were to be seen. In Bracketville itself there are many large shade trees and on the way there we crossed a stream that is actually flowing. At first we attributed this to irrigation but there is other evidence of water and these streams must be flowing down from the more verdant Texas hill country to the NE that we will be entering tomorrow. We are staying in the planned community of Fort Clark. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but it has a nice campground. The motel is full of deer hunters but we prefer to camp anyway. It turns out that the deer around here are quite small, not a whole lot larger than Key Deer due to he limited forage in the area. The rifle season goes for two months in Texas so we are expecting to hear some gunfire starting tomorrow. |
