Saturday, November 3, 2001 - Into the Texas Hill Country
44 miles. Bracketville/Ft. Clark, TX to River Tree Campground, Camp
Wood, TX
We left Ft. Clark after enjoying an excellent breakfast
of eggs, pancakes and sausage. The RV park puts it on every Saturday and
we were able to cash in. As we ate we watched wild turkeys saunter thru
the area.
Within a few miles of leaving Brackettville the terrain
became rolling and we knew we were getting into the hills. We are just
south of Camp Wood and there is nothing between B-ville and our campsite, which
is under big pecan trees. Their leaves look very much like those of a black
walnut. Today was an easy and enjoyable ride with the wind not really a
factor. The hills aren't huge and traffic is light The landscape is
changing with trees at lower, moister sites but the land is still all large
ranches. Although small by west Texas standards, 10,000 plus acre ranches were
for sale on the route today. With the trees and hills the "big
sky" part of the trip may be over. This is more the view of Michigan
where the horizon is always close. It makes it a lot easier to hide any
junk there is on a piece of property.
Supper will be macaroni and cheese, green pepper,
raspberry jelly roll, and Kool Aid. Now that's living. We are camped under
the spread of large wild pecan trees near the Nueces River, which like the
flowing streams here are spring fed. It must be a big spring to keep the
river going all year. Del Rio and Brackettville are located on springs
also.
After Texas gained its independence, Mexico wanted the
Nueces to be the border but Texas, of course, wanted the Rio Grande. The
dispute carried over after Texas entered the Union and was one of the causes of
the Mexican War.
