Thursday, November 8, 2001 - Deep in the Heart of Texas
32 miles. Lockhart, TX to Bastrop State Park, Bastrop, TX
We arose before dawn and were confronted with fog and
it was thick. The temperature was mild and to reach 80*. We rode
thru Lockhart, seeing very little of it with the fog and took T-20 to Bastrop
(pop. 6,456). The traffic thinned much sooner than did the fog. The
ride was across an undulating upland of livestock grazing and dry oak forest,
that is, when it finally revealed itself as the fog slowly lifted by midmorning.
With both of us feeling tired as we arrived in Bastrop,
we decided to spend the rest of the day in the Bastrop State Park. It is
part of a sandy area covered with an outlying stand of loblolly pine, separated
by 80 miles from the vast southern pinelands that stretch east in a broad band
all the way to the Carolinas and Virginia. Tomorrow we will continue on to
LaGrange and then start swinging southeast toward Lake Jackson to visit Aunt
Dorothy.
