Friday, November 9, 2001 - It Rains in Texas
50 miles. Bastrop State Park, Bastrop, TX to Fayetteville Powerplant State
Park, near Fayetteville, TX
Last night we got our first rain, it rained around
midnight for an hour or so, then it rained again in the morning just about the
time we would normally get up. The tent held up well, but we had a lot of wet
cloths in the morning that were hanging on the line. We also were able to catch
up on our sleep by staying in bed until the rain stopped. It is better that it
rained at night, than when we were riding.
After getting the soggy tent packed up, we got on the
road late, around 9:30, with overcast sky. The first 12 miles were a beautiful
rolling corridor of forested State Park road that ran between Bastrop State Park
and Buescher State Park, one of the highlights of the trip. The forest mainly
was Loblolly Pine.
After leaving the parks, we continued on farm road 153
to La Grange. Most of the traffic was on a nearby US highway, so the traffic was
light and we actually had a tail wind for part of it, so we made good time.
There are still a few hills, but the terrain has been mostly flat. We had difficulty
getting to a phone for a few days, and when we finally got to La Grange, it was
difficult to find one there. Let's hope they are easier to find in the future.
We turned off our biking map's route today to head to Lake Jackson to visit
Jeff's aunt. We are looking forward to a few days rest and to being with family.
