Monday, October 1, 2001 - There Ought to Be a Law!
Huntington Beach to San Elijo State Beach (Cardiff by the Sea)
That's right! No place on God's earth and
certainly not on the Taliban's earth should have as much good weather as they
get here in SoCal. I've asked several of the locals (no yokels around
here) if they ever get any bad weather and some indicate that "No",
they can't think of any. I asked the kid at the store where we got our
lunch the same question and his reply was, "Well, in February and March it
rains a lot and it gets real windy."
I pressed on, "But it's still warm, right?"
"Yes," was the reply. That's as bad as
it gets here, and all our Februarys and Marchs are like that or worse.
That is why you see them developing every last bit or ground anywhere near the
ocean.
Today we rode through surfer country. They are ubiquitous.
As we cycled along you could tell this is an area that has way too much money.
I've never seen so many nails [mani-pedicures} shoppes and art galleries abound.
There was even one unisex nails shoppe. In fairness I must admit I have
seen only one Roll Royce dealership. There are tanned, high heeled, mini-skirted
chicks strutting across the streets that you just don't see often enough
in Michigan.
That is some of the ambience.
We had to put on a few miles on the Interstate, I-5,
because the Camp Pendleton Marine Base is closed to civilian traffic because of
the terrorists. It doesn't seem like a real good place for those of their
ilk to to shoe their ugly visage, but you never know, I guess.
Tomorrow we will ride through San Diego and head east,
bidding the SoCal coast adieu. Off in the distance can be seen the mass of
clouds from tropical storm Julietta{?} over the inland deserts and Arizona.
They say it might even rain here from that, but don't bet on it.
