Tuesday, October 2, 2001 - Where in the World Is Carmen Diego?
45 miles. San Elijo Park to Sweet Water Summit County Park (just
outside of National City)
Well, we sure haven't seen her but she is certainly
named after one beautiful city! We started today in Elijo State Beach on
our time consuming ride through San Diego. It was foggy but nice, Very
common here right along the coast. Just before San Diego we rode up a
STEEP hill to check out the Torrey Pine Preserve, the rarest pine tree in the
USA. It specializes in grotesque beauty. From there it was quick descent
past UCal in San Diego into La Jolla, Ca. through some very toni neighborhoods,
neighborhoods so toni that houses less toni are being torn down and rebuilt as
trophy homes by high rollers with grounds carefully manicured by Mexicans,
hopefully not illegal. From there it was into San Diego proper on a bike
path skirting the harbor with yachts anchored and a couple of Pacific Fleet CV's
in the distance. Then through the heart of S.D. past the colossal convention
center and under a bridge forbidden to cyclists. It soared like a child's
erector set 200-300 feet above the harbor and we were happy not to be up there!
Then it was in to National City where the working class
lives. We camped at the Sweetwater Summit (always an ominous title to a
cyclist) County Park. It was right under the flight path of jets
landing at the S.D. Airport. I opined to Joan the Toni neighborhoods of La
Jolla were spared such an indignity.
