Dresden

Dresden was regarded as Germany’s most beautiful large city, until it was destroyed near the end of WWII with a strategically absurd carpet bombing. The Russians asked the Americans and British to destroy a previously intact German city to break the will of the German people. The Russians later distanced themselves from their request, and used the destruction of Dresden as a propaganda tool.

The architectural glory of Dresden is gradually being restored. The most significant buildings have been replicated in the city center and the construction continues.

The opera house.

The Zwinger, a palace built for festivals and tournaments.

Heather and Dan at the Zwinger.

This courtyard with statues was the 20 square meter space which stayed intact after the saturation bombing, no other area of the central city survived.

This mural is made of Meissen porcelain tiles.

Inside the Hofkirche.

The Frauenkirche opened only a few months ago, there was a huge line to get inside. You can tell which stones were original by the dark coating of soot.

Of all things, we found a recently opened ‘’Irish Pub’’ where we had dinner and drinks.
