Wisconsin Dells

I had heard of the Wisconsin Dells when I was living in Chicago. I had a vague notion that it was a naturally scenic area that had become commercialized. Because we were passing through the area, I wanted to stop by and check it out. I was somewhat surprised to find mile after mile of tourist traps, culminating in a large, flat version of Clifton Hill in pre-casino Niagara Falls Canada (circa 1990s). Tourist trinkets and traps abound.

You can go on the amphibious vehicle rides.

Or maybe get married.

We found an interesting vegetarian Indian restaurant that also served Middle-Eastern food. The owner/chef was very nice and conversational. Fortunately, we were there during a quiet Monday. Apparently the place (Dells and all) was completely packed over the weekend.

I didn't have to read the flier to deduce what this mural was all about. The crackpot rant confirmed my suspicions.

Let's make our escape.

We went hiking around Devil's Lake State Park, part of the original attraction of the area.

Dan in the Dells.

Heather was craving ice cream (not custard!), so we stopped at this little ice cream place and had very generous servings of ice cream.
