"Kind of a Big Deal" Screening Event

M-agination films are student-produced films done by students of all concentrations. These films are done totally for fun, by not only Screen Arts and Cultures majors, but engineers, art students and the like. Their “Kind of a Big Deal” event showcased all the movies created this semester. The event attracted friends of the actors and directors, people who appeared in the films and people like me, just coming to experience the fun of Michigan student films. The MC’s for the night were members of a university comedy troupe, Comco, providing us with very entertaining in between movie skits. A couple of these comedians actually starred in the films. The plots of the films ranged from horror to faux-infomercials to historical parodies. I applaud the student directors, producers and actors for working so hard and putting their movies out there but two I thought in particular really stood out. The Invention of Calculus and Stained, were movies with clear sound, interesting and clean camera angles and actors with a very significant presence. The Invention of Calculus was short and sweet, a very witty parody of the truth behind how calculus was invented. The second film was a longer and more plot heavy film. Stained told the story of a young man trying to escape the damaging effects of spaghetti sauce stains. It was incredibly goofy, and provoked much laughter from the audience. The acting was great though and the production was very professional. Overall, my first experience at an M-agination film screening event was definitely satisfactory. It makes me happy that students are getting themselves involved in producing their own films, especially when it has nothing to do with their concentration. Fun, creative, student-produced arts are a great addition to our Michigan community.
