Although the idea of gender-neutral fashion may seem radical, it's actually quite popular in contemporary style and fashion. With the recent revival of the 80's aesthetic, clothes have moved towards the edgier side of the fashion spectrum. The upcoming photo shoot will break down the walls of androgynous ignorance by blurring the lines of gender binaries. Even better, we'll take you to the Ann Arbor stores that sell the style, including Star Vintage, American Apparel, Orchid Lane, and The GetUp.
Stores we Recommend:
* Salvation Army- offers eclectic pieces for both men and women at a price easily afforded
* Pitaya- new sleek fashions that are always in style
* Motivation- Sporting bright colors and sleek eighties fashion
* Star Vintage/ The GetUp- Pieces ranging from all eras
* Urban Outfitters/ American Apparel- for hipster inspired looks
* Orchid Lane- For boho chic and oversized sweaters
Androdgynize Your Style:
1. Proportions: Play with volume, deemphasizing or emphasizing areas that are associated with your gender or the opposite gender. If you have a smaller chest try wearing a fitted coat or blazer to have a Grace Jones look and if you have a larger bust try putting a loosely fitted cardigan or sweater. Guys try women?s pants or form fitting bottoms and try on tops that aren?t necessarily made in your section
2. Colors: For guys, a more vibrant color palette can play against the stereotypical male ensemble color schemes, while more neutral hues for ladies is a play on traditional menswear.
3. Accessories: Here?s a time for men to rock purses and women to wear ties and cufflinks. Guys can go for a gaudier look by layering jewelry of choice, while girls should go for more simple and edgier jewelry.
4. Hair: For guys its time to grow out your locks, while girls can sleek up with shorter haircuts to enhance bone structure. Both sexes can go for an angular bob or asymmetrical haircut, which is both simple to style and compliments cheekbones.
5. Shoes: For girls, try on Oxfords and Penny loafers to compliment your skinny jeans and oversized cardigans for a nerdy-chic look. Guys can glam up with a little height and bling added to their footwear.
6. Combining elements of all genders is key in fashioning an androgynous look.
