This model of a Metrolink F59PH commuter locomotive began as an
undecorated Athearn F59PHI model. I built a new cab, front pilot, and roof
to represent the older F59PH carbody, and added photoetched radiator
grilles. I also milled the underframe and added fuel tank and air tank
details which are hidden on the F59PHI by side skirts. An unmodified
F59PHI in Amtrak paint is shown in some of the images below for
comparison. Model completed December 2003.
Behind the scenes: Milled frame, and before painting. The battery box
behind the fuel tank is inaccurate but I used it to hide the motor mount
on the model.
Long Island Rail Road motive power and HEP car.
Until the late 1990s, these units were used on either end of push-pull
diesel powered commuter trains on Long Island, New York. The locomotive
is a custom detailed Athearn model of an EMD GP38-2 on a modified Atlas chassis.
The HEP cab car is a Walthers/TM Alco FA-1m that has been de-motored.
Both models are detailed and custom painted, and were completed in the summer
of 2001.
