“Alternative Comics” refers to the second wave of underground comics that followed the underground renaissance of the 1960’s and 1970’s. These comics were largely experimental and contained diverse subject matter. Drawing styles from other art forms, such as book illustration and poster design, were often integrated. Many artists during this period were influenced by avant-garde literature and art movies.

Some artists involved in alternative comics were Greg Irons and Tom Veitch, who did cartoon strips about Vietnam; S. Clay Wilson, Trina Robbins, Robert Williams, Justin Greene (Binky Brown), Gilbert Shelton, Art Spiegelman, and Chester Brown. Alternative publications included Raw, Love and Rockets, and American Splendor.
