Fred Artistidès, who publishes under the name Fred, started writing satirical humor in French and foreign newspapers since the 1950’s, most notable in Here-Paris and The New Yorker. He started his first illustrations when he became artistic director of Hara-Kiri, which consisted of several covers, songs, and small excerpt comics.

When he joined Pilot magazine in 1965, he dictated his most famous comic, Philémon. Here he combined poetry and cartooning to create one of the most surrealistic series ever done. But alongside Philémon, Fred drew illustrations with “black humor” for Pilot as well as becoming aid in writing for fellow co-workers of Pilot. His most notable conjunction was with Alexis, with whom he helped manufacture the Timoléon series. So it is not uncommon to find out Fred wrote several short cartoons for television later in his career because he was blessed with an eye in creating harmony between words and image.
