American Hispanic Male Cartoonists The theme of American Hispanic Male Cartoonists is very broad so I narrowed it down to the series Love and Rockets by the Hernandez brothers. The series is a compilation of three separate stories by three separate artists. Each story follows different Hispanic characters. The one story is about a little Hispanic boy named Julio and how is family and others treat him. In the one story he is beat up by a group of white boys, but then gets in trouble by his strict father. Some of the letters to the editors were criticizing these story lines because they thought the writers were portraying Hispanic people in a bad light. There are two other stories in the books. One of the stories is about a queer Hispanic lady and her Hispanic friends. This is more of a personal story just about her friend ships and about her own issues. Some of those issues may be based on her heritage but not as obviously as the other stories. One common theme in the stories is that when women are portrayed and drawn they are not stick figure women; they were drawn as larger women. The styles of these artists are all pretty similar, they are all beautifully drawn a simple style but extremely descriptive. |
