No one can claim to have a better genetic disposition toward comics than Sophie Crumb. Daughter of alternative comics godfather Robert Crumb and Weirdo magazine editor Aline Kominsky, Sophie follows in the family business with her own “Belly Button Comix.” This series is published by Fantagraphics here in the United States and by Oog & Blik across the pond in Europe. Asides from appearing in various European publications, Sophie’s art work has also appeared in the film adaptation of Dan Clowes’s graphic novel Ghost World.

Sophie grew up in Winters, California before, at the age of 9, moving with her parents to Sauve, a rural town in the South of France. In addition to being a talented cartoonist, Sophie has a variety of other talents. She is also a musician, and she has studied acrobatics and clowning at a circus school. In fact, she has toured France as part of a traveling circus troupe. She has also taught herself tattooing and has, in the past, earned a living teaching English. Her varied experiences growing up in France play a strong influence on the content of her work.
