Chris Ware is most famous for his graphic novel Jimmy Corrigan—the Smartest Kid on Earth. Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1967 but moving to San Antonio at the age of 16, Ware attended the University of Texas in Austin. There, while penning a weekly strip in the local newspaper, Ware was discovered by Art Spiegelman, the famous artist known for his graphic novels Maus and, more recently, In the Shadow of No Towers.

Ware’s Jimmy Corrigan is a sweeping, multi-generational story set in Chicago, dealing with the themes of isolation, detachment, and despair. In it, he chronicles the lonely lives of Jimmy Corrigan, a middle-aged man, and his grandfather of the same name. Among the awards that it has won are the Guardian First Book Award in 2001, the American Book Award in 2000, and the prestigious French comics award “L’Alph Art” award in 2003. Ware is also know for his strip The Acme Novelty Library, as well as The RagTime Ephemeralist, a journal on early 20th century American pop music.
