Beaufort, South Carolina

This is a picturesque historic port town located on Port Royal island about 45 minutes north of Hilton Head.  It is accessible via a newly expanded highway and bridge system.  Beaufort is the second oldest town in the state having been founded in 1711. The Spanish explorer Predo de Salaza first came to the Beaufort area in 1514.  The English settlement of the 18th century produced Indigo for export.  The city was occupied by Federal troops during the Civil War; this left it unscathed.  Today is has over 90 historic homes and buildings eager to show their grace and charm.  Beaufort is well known through the low-country for is main street of unique shops, antique stores and restaurants.  Pictured below are a few of the architectural wonders of this fine city.
