Description: Despite the fact that women received half of doctoral degrees in sciences, women’s representation in tenure-track and full professor positions has been very low. The National Academy of Science “Beyond Bias” Report suggested that women may not be successful with career advancement as they accept “housekeeping” jobs including teaching and advising students compared to men, who focus on competitive assignments. As a result, high research productivity, as measured by peer-reviewed publications, characterizes men scientists. This may lead to the low rate of women reaching leadership positions in academia. The fact that women receive limited or no mentoring has been one of the identified barriers to career development.

 

The aim of this workshop is to educate women junior faculty about different career paths in dental academia and offer specific and personalized advice for career development and promotion.

Prior to the workshop, each participant will be required to complete a one-page survey with questions related to desired career path, expectations, perceived difficulties and barriers. During the workshop, each participant will receive personalized, confidential career consultation on these issues with one of the workshop’s senior mentors.
