History of the Class and Scholarship
History
During the early years of the program, a Scholarship Committee reviewed the College's recommendations for scholarships. Over the years the committee has become more involved in the selection process. Currently all applications submitted by students for a '31E Scholarship are reviewed by the committee. The committee selects promising candidates who are then interviewed; the '31E Scholars are selected from the candidates.
In 1992, the Class voted to expand the Scholarship Committee to include descendants, former scholars, and University representatives. These new members of the Scholarship Committee join the 1931E Classmates in their dedication and enthusiasm and will carry on the program and traditions of the 1931 Engineering Class.
All '31E Scholarships, including the Commemorative Scholarships, are awarded on academic record. The scholarships are awarded annually; the number and amount depend on the amount of interest generated by the endowment fund.
Entertaining the '31E Scholars at the annual class reunion dinner has become a tradition for the Class of 1931E. It gives the students an opportunity to become acquainted with their benefactors and it gives the alumni, their descendants, and committee members a chance to know the scholars. The scholars and their parents are invited to attend.
All former '31E Scholars are invited to join the 1931E reunion activities. Since the program's inception, over 100 students have received scholarships.
'31E Recognition Program
In 1999 Kurt Verhoff, grandson of Steele and Mildred Bailey, designed a '31E Scholar pin for the program. All scholars will receive their pin at the 1931E Reunion Dinner.
In 2004 the committee purchased graduation stoles that identify our '31E Scholars.
