Meet the Class of 2009!
Becky Bernard, Huneth
Lor, & Tatjana Thuener-Rego
At the University of Michigan, freshmen
gymnasts are integral members of the team. Last season
Katie Lieberman
and Nellie
Kippley had an immediate impact on vault & bars
and bars & floor, respectively. Moreover, Katie
went on to win several postseason honors, including
the Big Ten Co-Championship title on vault, Big Ten
Freshman of the Year, and NCAA First Team All-America
on vault.
Such accomplishments are not surprising for the Wolverines,
who have a long-standing tradition of success among
their freshmen gymnasts. Over the past 11 years,
9 Michigan gymnasts have earned 13 NCAA First Team All-America
honors during their freshman campaigns [Katie
Lieberman (2005, Vault), Lindsey
Bruck (2004, Beam), Jenny
Deiley (2003, All-Around), Becca
Clauson (2003, Beam), Elise
Ray (2001, All-Around, Bars, Beam, Floor), Janessa
Grieco (2000, Vault), Sarah Cain (1997, All-Around,
Bars), Nikki Peters (1996, Bars), Heather
Kabnick (1995, Vault)].
This year's freshmen are primed to continue this tradition.
Becky Bernard, Huneth Lor, and Tatjana Thuener-Rego
are three talented gymnasts who will likely have an
immediate contribution to the Michigan lineup.
In anticipation of the upcoming intrasquad (December
10th), we wanted to give you, the fans, an opportunity
to get to know the members of the Wolverine Class of
2009. Over the next three weeks, we'll highlight a different
Michigan freshman as part of this "Meet the Freshmen"
feature on umgym.com. We'll also be posting their athlete
bios, where they replied to questions posed by the
GymFantry.
Stay tuned to umgym.com for further updates!
