Food Calories And Physical Activity

In the body, the energy trapped within the carbohydrate, lipid (fat), and protein nutrients is extracted in processes that make energy available to the cells. Because the three major food nutrients contain energy, and because all bodily functions require energy, both food and physical activity can be evaluated by the common denominator, energy. The greatest demand for energy occurs during physical activity.

What Is A Calorie?

A calorie represents a unit of heat (energy) that expresses the energy value of a food. Although the term is widely used in the popular literature, it has a precise scientific meaning. One Calorie (spelled with a capital C), represents the amount of heat necessary to increase the temperature of 1 kilogram of water, which is slightly more than a quart, by 1 degree centigrade. A Calorie, or more precisely a kilocalorie, is abbreviated kcal. For example, a McDonald's Big Mac and regular fries contain about 783 kcal, and thus the energy to raise the temperature of about 783 quarts or 196 gallons of water by 1 degree centigrade. On the other hand, a boiled egg contains only 80 kcal, which would increase the temperature of 80 quarts of water by 1 degree centigrade.
