Abstract: The theory of an elastic string in classical special relativity is considered. Standard elasticity concepts are applied to parametrize the elastic tensor, which is put into a Lagrangian in order to define canonical variables. A few specific models for the elastic potential energy as a function of elastic strain are examined, with brief comments about their possible suitability for canonical quantization.
