Papers
- Construction of Invariant Scalar Amplitudes without
Kinematical Singularities...
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
My infamously unpublished, 1963 Ph.D. dissertation, with
Henry Stapp as advisor.
- On Stapp's Theorem
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
With P. Minkowski and R. Seiler, presented at the Boulder
Lorentz Group Symposium, 1964.
- A Relativistic One-Particle Wave-Equation for
Arbitrary Spin and Non-zero Mass
[pdf]
While finishing graduate studies in Berkeley, I was one of
several people who independently came up with the
2(2j+1)-component spin formalism. I believe that Hans
Joos [Fortschr. d. Phys. 11, 65 (1962)] was the
first. This is a scan of the original manuscript pages.
- The Dirac Algebra for Any Spin
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
Presented at the Boulder Lorentz Group Symposium, 1964. This
paper develops the Dirac algebra corresponding to the
2(2j+1)-component wave equation to a logical conclusion.
- Existence of Parity Experiments in Multiparticle
Reactions
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
An unpublished observation (1966) about a claim that appeared in
Physical Review Letters.
- Macroscopic Causality and Permanence of Smoothness for
Two-Particle Scattering
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
Presented at the Fourth Boulder Conference on Particles and High
Energy Physics, 1967.
- Matrix Elements of the Translation Operator:
Variations on the Jost-Hepp Theorem
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
A 1970 preprint which covers large translations outside the
velocity cone for C∞ vectors and spacelike
translations for analytic vectors. Never submitted for
publication, although I think it has some useful stuff. R.
Seiler and I had planned a sequel with our independent results
for decrease inside the velocity cone, but we never got around
to it.
- Euclidean Fermi Fields with a Hermitean
Feynman-Kac-Nelson Formula, II
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
An unpublished 1974 preprint proposing a solution to the
Euclidean fermion doubling problem that overcame a problem with
local interactions in an earlier attempt of mine. It was
rejected by Communications in Mathematical Physics
because the referee felt it unlikely that the theory could be
renormalizable, due to an extra power of momentum in the
Euclidean Dirac two-point function. Although I thought it quite
possible that the same structure that eliminated the doubling
might help the renormalization, I was too down at the time to
pursue it, and never got around to it again.
- Effective Criticality and Stability of the Double
Well Coincident Pair Configuration
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
- Computational Solution for the Double Well Nondilute Pair
Configuration
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
This pair of papers was submitted to Nuclear Physics in
1989, and basically accepted with the proviso that they be
combined into one. I actually did that, but stuff intervened,
and I never resubmitted. As far as I know, the idea in these
papers is not bad. It's interesting in retrospect that the
computational part was really impractical without a mainframe
system (MTS) at the time it was originally done
(February, 1983 -- July, 1984).
- The Elastic Energy-Momentum Tensor in Special
Relativity
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
Work I did mostly in Summer, 1972, with the aim of making an
elastically bound model of the classical point electron. I
didn't know at the time that Bryce DeWitt had already developed
the theory of elasticity in general relativity. In spite of his
prior art, my approach seemed pretty clean, so I published it as
a pedagogical paper [Annals of Physics 196, no. 2,
(1989) 345-360]. Unfortunately, I was also unaware of work done
in the interim that should have been cited, which was sharply
pointed out by one of the experts, Gérard A. Maugin, in
his review of the paper for Mathematical Reviews
(MR1027664).
- The Classical Relativistic Elastic String
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
This 1974 article was neither circulated as a preprint nor
submitted for publication. I was never much attracted by dual
string theory, which was prominent then and has been ever since,
in spite of the elegance of the model and the appealing audacity
of its approach to the problem of quantization by increasing the
number of spacetime dimensions. But I was curious about the
possibility of quantizing nondual string models in conventional
spacetime dimensions. The article develops a possible
foundation for that. While it doesn't attempt actual
quantization, I think it does a pedagogically clean job of
laying out a classical, canonical theory of relativistic elastic
strings.
- Schoonschip '91
[abs]
[pdf]
With M. Veltman.
Notes
- Summary of Local Baker-Wightman Invariance for
Euclidean Functional Field Equations
[intro]
[pdf]
[src]
G. A. Baker and A. S. Wightman introduced an idea for enlarging
the class of solutions of Euclidean functional field equations
for Φ4 field theories, to possibly avoid their
triviality in four dimensions. As they pointed out, it violated
the cluster property. These notes summarize my extension of
their idea, which aims to restore the cluster property.
- Precession of the Perihelion of Mercury
[abs]
[pdf]
[src]
Notes for a pair of lectures on the calculation of the
precession of Mercury in special relativity, contrasted with
Feynman's general relativity approach.
- One-Photon States and Lorentz Invariance
[pdf]
[src]
Fairly systematic notes from Physics 621 giving a conceptual
description of Lorentz/Poincaré covariance for photons,
from the point of view of the radiation gauge.
- Review notes on waves
[pdf]
From Physics 242, Introduction to Modern Physics.
- Introduction to Lorentz Spinors
[pdf]
Very preliminary, only some notes on the homogeneous Lorentz
group and SL(2,C) are included here.
- SL(2,C) Exponentiation Counterexample
[pdf]
[src]
A set of examples of elements of SL(2,C) that are not
exponentials of elements of its Lie algebra.
- Notes on the Umezawa-Kållén-Lehmann Representation and
the Feynman Propagator
[pdf]
[src]
Systematics of sharply defined propagators for any spin and
nonzero mass.
- Weak Asymptotic Causality and the Haag-Ruelle S
Matrix: Summary of Results
[pdf]
Scanned pages of a handwritten manuscript describing results
from unpublished work we did in the late 1960's.
- Observability of the S matrix
[txt]
Proof of the well-known fact that scattering transition
probablities determine the S matrix, up to overall phases
in superselection sectors.
Schoonschip manual
- Schoonschip a program for symbol handling
[pdf]
