VAR CF0016 PANEL/CROSS COLUMNS 85 - 85 NUMERIC MD EQ 0 SAMPLE COMPONENT: 'NEW' CROSS-SECTION OR PANEL CASE ------------------------------------------------------------------- The full 1992, 1994, and 1996 study samples each constitutes a national cross-section; however, the total cases in each study (2485, 1795, and 1714 respectively, unweighted) are composed partly of respondents previously interviewed ("panel" cases), while the remainder are 'new' respondents first selected during the current study year from the same sample frame ("cross-section" cases). All 1992 panel cases had been interviewed in 1990. All 1994 panel cases had been interviewed in 1992, as part of the 1992 new 'cross-section' cases (no 1994 panel cases had been interviewed in 1990). All 1996 panel cases had been interviewed in 1994, and a portion had also been interviewed in 1992. NOTE: 1958,1960,1974,1976: In each study 1958, 1960, 1974 and 1976, the cross-section included both 'new' respondents and some respondents who had been previously interviewed within the time-series. The latter type of respondents are not yet flagged here. It should, however, be emphasized that the only 'Panel' cases represented in the Cumulative Data file are those which are also time-series cross-section cases. The released Panel files which cover these time periods (American Panel Study: 1956,1958,1960 and American National Election Series: 1972-1974- 1976 datasets) include respondents who were dropped from the time- series but who were reinterviewed for the Panel File alone (note: questions in the Panel datasets are the same as those in the time- series). Users who wish to have available the full set of panel cases from these years must use the American Panel Study: 1956,1958, 1960 data (NES dataset 1956.M60) and the American National Election Series: 1972-1974-1976 data (NES dataset 1972.M76), which are available from the NES Web site and from ICPSR. 1980: In 1980, the 'Major' Panel and the 'Minor' Panel were conducted using samples distinct from the 1980 time-series cross-section sample. No 1980 panel cases are included in the Cumulative Data File but may be found in the 1980 Major Panel dataset (NES dataset 1980.SVX) and the 1980 Integrated file dataset (NES dataset 1980.WSTV), which are available from the NES Web site and from ICPSR. Ns indicated are unweighted. 1992: 923005 1994: 940002 1996: 960002 1. "Panel" case (1992 N=1359; 1994 N=759; 1996 N=1316) all other years: 0.
