RELIGION [2] ------------------------------------------------------------------- USE WEIGHT VARIABLE VCF0009/VCF0009A/VCF0009B. SEE APPENDIX "RELIGION 1990 AND LATER" SEE ALSO: VCF0129. Beginning in 1990, the full set of religion codes (in VCF0129 for 1960-1988) was expanded considerably, by adding codes for different affiliations within the major mainline Protestant denominations and by reworking almost entirely the Pentecostal, Holiness, fundamentalist, and evangelical Protestant denominations. VCF0152 provides the 'new' set of full religion codes, and appendix "RELIGION 1990 AND LATER" includes a rough 'translation table' relating the 1960-1988 full religion set of codes to the newer set of full religion codes which begins in 1990. Questions about religious affiliation were preceded by the filter question, 'Lots of things come up that keep people from attending religous services even if they want to. Thinking about your life these days, do you ever attend religious services, apart from occasional weddings, baptisms or funerals?' Following this filter variable, the text of the main religious affiliation question differs according to how R answered the filter variable. In 1992, this set of questions was not part of the short-form questionnaire; for short-form 'panel' cases, however, 1990 study data were incorporated into the 1992 religion summary variable. In 1994, 1992 data were incorporated for 'panel' cases. Note that in 1992 several changes were made: codes 127 and 133 have been combined into code 127 [no 1992 code 133]; code 102 has been moved to become code 306 [no 1992 code 102]; and codes 267 and 261 have been added (new). In 1994, the following codes were added: 111,186,234,262. In 1996, code 240 was added. In 1998, codes 263,264,524,725,726,727 were added. 10-790. Religion as coded 800. Agnostics 801. Atheists 997.
