--an explanation of the design created by Lucian Gomoll

The WSSA site is based on the oil painting Torso; Character by Lucian Gomoll (WS class of 2003). In the painting, a woman's torso is featured without a face, which might provoke a traditional process of objectification. However, the thick expressive brush strokes contain icons of women's lives (such as the phoenix at the bottom of her spine). This battles the tendency to objectify a female model, saying that stories and emotion exist everywhere. For the full painting, click here.

The WSSA website functions in the painting's spirit. The rotating quotes at the bottom-right of the screen frame some of the 'hidden' images found in the brush strokes. Both the painting and website are tributes to women of all types.
