Richard Duardo, Zootsuit, 1978

This poster shows two zootsuiters. Zoot suits were characterized by baggy, flowing pants, long, wide suit coats and shiny shoes. Sometimes a hat and tie was included. Mexican Americans adopted this outrageous style from young African Americans. The suits were a form of protest themselves, because they used an extravagant amount of fabric in a war-time atmosphere of fabric rationing. 34
