Research

The illustrations in picture books, as well as short stories, are typically used to visually depict what is described in the text. In the most popular and most honored picture books, however, the illustrations do much more than just visualize the text. They use a combination of color, shape, and space to evoke certain images and emotions depending on the particular story. By analyzing the illustrations as well as their interactions with text, we see that certain themes begin to present themselves. These themes will be discussed here with examples of famous children's picture books as well as examples from our own story.
