Literacy is perhaps one of the most important skills and developmental processes in the development of a child. Providing the groundwork for a life of reading comprehension and expansion, early child understanding of basic word comprehension is something to be catered to and aided in any way possible. As such, the process of reading should be one that caters to the child in order to make what can oftentimes be a long progression into anything but sterile education. Rather, by making the practice enjoyable to some degree, reading becomes a game and not a loathed task.

One important trait to child development is the partnership and duality of learning. While books can be oftentimes simple black and white on page, illustrations help develop an interaction with the reader and demonstrate an example of what is constructed by the words nearby. As such, the illustrations are a minor form of communication with the reader. The success of video tape reading programs is born out of the interaction developed as the budding reader observes various computer graphics and acts used to elaborate on the process of reading. The Child Development Information website cites that, because of the interaction that exists, “reading and writing are simply talking on paper.” Various psychological studies have demonstrated that the reading process is carried out through conversational principles. As such, it is important to not only present reading as a partnership in the child’s solo reading, but also develop ways in which an adult may actually aid reading through a joint activity with the child.Various activities may be employed to help make reading interactive visually.
