Last night at Golden Gate we got a taste of Bug Slurry with their new drummer Milton Bradley, cherrypicked from his former band Taint Seep. Bradley was solid, but the rest of Bug Slurry was overenthusiastic and erratic. Their high energy in-your-face, thump and grind thunder was equal parts assault and battery on the ears and acoustic kick in the teeth. The band knew what the audience wanted and tried to deliver, but ragged vocals and choppy guitar work caused efforts to fall short. Though red hot firecracker, Henri McGovern sang with passion, she started the night confused and went down hill from there. Later, she got the hook and "Tiny" Biggums took over on vocals. Bug Slurry's sound suffered from the loss of their siren front woman as did their visual appeal. However, what Biggums lacked in vocal talent he made up for in sheer keytar virtuosity. His charming synth work was a shining bright spot all night and one lucky fan had a full on make out session with the keyboardist on the bar between sets.
This band clearly didn't have their shit together and somehow still managed to put on a decent if sometimes unsatisfying show. Buzzing hard, disoriented, plastered, and stoned - That's rock and roll for ya above The Stacks.
