First, N-N'-bis-Bocguanidine is deprotonated by DBU. The deprotonated compound then attacks compound 16 in an SN2 reaction. The formed compound is then deprotonated by DBU. Finally, DBU reprotonates the compound to form the final product, Compound 17.
