Course Reserves

Putting Material on Reserve

The Circulation Department places material on reserve for your courses each semester.

To place materials on reserve: contact Bobbie Snow (763-3767; barbsnow@umich.edu.  You may also send requests to Bobbie Snow via Law School mail. Course Reserve forms are available at the Circulation Desk or online (pdf).

Open Reserves - Unless designated as appropriate for closed reserves, the following materials will be placed on Open Reserves:

Law Library books; shelved by call number

Photocopies; shelved in hanging files by a library-assigned reserve number

Staff intervention is not necessary to obtain open reserve material.  Students may freely use items on open reserves in the reserve area.  Copy machines are in the enclosed area.  Items in the Open Reserve area can be checked out of the Open Reserve area for 4 hours, 2 hours during exam periods.

Closed Reserves - The following materials will always be placed on Closed Reserves:

        All private copies of books

        Any software

        Any video tapes

A specific Law Library book or photocopy designated by faculty or library staff as appropriate for closed reserves

        West nutshell series

If an item is on closed reserve a student must come to the Circulation Desk and show ID in order to check the item out.  Check out time is limited to 4 hours, 2 hours during exam periods.

Sometimes library staff will remove a book from open reserves and place it on closed reserves if demand warrants such a change.  A faculty member may call and request that a book be switched from open to closed reserves.
