Law School Faculty Services  Phone Page FAQ

Phone Page FAQ

  • Who may use the Phone Page Service?  All regular, clinical and visiting faculty and Law School deans and administrators may use the Phone Page Service for Law School work.  Law School secretaries may also make requests and receive materials on behalf of professors

  • Can I request material on a rush basis?  Yes, the Phone Page accepts rush requests and makes every effort to get material to you when you need it.   However, the service may not always be able to meet your rush deadline.  This means that in some cases, you or your secretary may need to retrieve material from the library on your own.  When making a rush request, please indicate the date and time you need the item; the Phone Page will let you know if they cannot meet your accelerated deadline.

  • If I send a long list of items, how long does it take for the Phone Page to send them all? For lengthy request lists, the Phone Page sends the material as retrieved, rather than all at one time.  You should allow at least two weeks and sometimes longer for completion of the entire list, since some items may be delayed because they need to be photocopied or borrowed via Interlibrary Loan, or arent on the shelf and need to be searched or recalled.

  • What if the book or article I need isnt available on campus?  If the book or article you need isnt owned by any library on campus or available from Lexis, Westlaw or the web, the Phone Page will send you an Options Report asking if you want us to obtain the item for you via Interlibrary Loan (ILL).  If you let us know that you do want the item through ILL by responding to the Report, we will obtain the item for you that way.  If the item you need isnt available through ILL, we will try to provide you information about how to get the item from an alternative source.

  • How do I return books?  All books borrowed from libraries on campus or via Interlibrary Loan may be returned to the Law Library book drops.  Book drops are located on Level 9 of Legal Research, on the 3rd floor of Hutchins Hall near the Faculty Lounge, and on S-1 of the Law Library.

How can my research assistant get material?  You can authorize proxy borrowing privileges for your research assistant at the Law Library and other campus libraries, and you can also authorize your research assistant to purchase a copy card on your University of Michigan account.  For information about how to make such arrangements for your research assistant, contact Barb Garavaglia (764-9338; bvaccaro@umich.edu).
