This is a pretty easy trip so just sit back and drive. There are 2 border crossings in Windsor/Detroit area but I am going to suggest you take the Ambassador Bridge rather than the tunnel. Overall, with an estimated wait of about 15-20 minutes crossing the border, the trip should take about 4 hours and 43 minutes if you go straight (believe me, with all the times I've done this trip I should know). Don't be afraid of all the directions listed below - I've just tried to break everything down step by step.

Ok here we go:

  1. Get on the 401 West and drive from Toronto to Windsor. Should take no more than 3.5 hours with no stops.
  2. In Windsor, the 401 takes a turn to the right and changes into Huron Church. There are signs that clearly direct you towards the "Bridge to the USA" (Ambassador Bridge).
  3. Huron Church will take you straight on the bridge (approx 10 minute drive from start of Huron Church to bridge). Please remember to stay in the lanes designated for autos/cars at all times. This is the lane on the far left. The truck lanes (2 right lanes) can get very very congested.
  4. Ambassador Bridge itself has only 2 lanes in each direction. The left lane is for cars and the right lane is for trucks. Please stay in the car lanes. On the other end of the bridge you will find the USA customs/immigration booths. I strongly suggest that you bring your passport for the purpose of crossing into the United States. This should make things much easier.
  5. After US immigration, there is a row of toll booths. Fees are $4.00 CDN and $2.75 USD. Try to use the toll booths to the left as this will put you in a better position to enter the US highway you will need to take.
  6. After the toll booths there is a set of lights. Just past these lights there are 3 different highway entrance ramps. You need to take 96/94 (ramp at far left).
  7. Take 96/94 for approx 1 mile (just a couple of minutes) to 94 West Chicago.
  8. Travel on 94 West Chicago for approx 40 minutes (40-45 miles) to State Street in Ann Arbor.
  9. Exit State Street ramp and at the top of the ramp turn right.
  10. Turn right at the first driveway on the right and follow this road to Sheraton Hotel. Please note that if you are staying at the Courtyard by Marriot, it is located across the street from the Sheraton Hotel front entrance.

THAT'S IT, YOU'RE THERE!!

Here are some important notes for your trip.

  1. Service stations (gas and fast food) are located all along the Toronto/Windsor corridor. They are usually about 80 km apart and are clearly marked.
  2. If a sitdown meal is required, there are a number of cities along the Toronto/Windsor corridor that have excellent choices.
    1. Cambridge (1 hr west of Toronto)
      - go south on 24
      - many choices
    2. Woodstock (1.5 hr west of Toronto)
      - go north on 59
      - Kelsey's, Tim Hortons, Wendys
    3. London (2 hrs west of Toronto)
      - go north on Wellington
      - many choices
    4. Windsor (you're almost there)
      - many choices on Huron Church as you make your way to the bridge
  3. It's a good idea to use the restrooms along Huron Church in Windsor as you make your way towards the border. This is important because the wait at the border, depending on when you cross, can be considerable.

Hope all this helps. It'll be great seeing all of you.
