  • Hi again Simon,

Mike showed me another web site that I thought might be great for you, as it combines two of your interests...music and birds! This site has some fun songs such as the classic "If You're Happy and You Know it Flap your Wings!"Here it is: http://ny.audubon.org/education/songs.htm

    Have fun with it!

Mike heard about another web site that you and your mom and dad might want to check out. It has a few neat "bird things" on it, and might also lead you to some other bird-related links. Here's the address: http://www.comexplore.net/americanbirdcenter.html

Thinking of you and keeping you in our prayers every single day.

You are a very brave boy and I hope you can play with me this summer. I will share my Batman figures with you and we can play with the Bat Cave.

I hope we can go somewhere again with our extended family. Did you like the Music Fest? I did. I had fun playing the games and I made a Valentine for my mom. I will say a prayer for you tonight.

  • Hi Simon, Today Oma came with Miriam and your dad to music class. I think Oma had just as much fun as Miriam. I hope you will come to visit us at music class soon. Everyone misses you. I wondered if you and your family know about the family symphony at the Michigan theater on Sunday at 4. There is also an instrument petting zoo at 2:30. I hope you can go. I will not be there as I am going to Chicago with my daughter and grandaughter to visit Ira's mom and sister. Much love, Gari

  • Hello, Simon! Hi to Mom, Dad, and Miriam, too! I haven't written in a while, but we've sure been thinking about you all. "Just in case" buckets are used around our house sometimes, too -- we hate to use them; but it beats the alternative (messing up our clothes or bed -- yucky!). So they're handy to have around, "just in case," right?

Oh, we have two new jokes for you -- both from Danny again (he's 7, and he's funny guy like you are). Q: What do cows do for fun? A: They go to the mooooo-vies! And here's one that's good for cold winter days: One boy asks another, "Is your house warm?" Second boy replies, "Yup -- the painter gave it two coats last summer!" [Get it? A "coat" of paint? A warm winter "coat?"] Danny really cracked up over that one. Hope the giggles keep you warm, too!

I wanted to let you know, too, that Laura has changed her prayer a little bit.... Earlier it was the camp-out that she wanted you to share with her. Now she asks God to help you get better and stronger every day so you can come to her birthday party. The party won't be until late June, so you've got plenty of time to work on it. And all those strong medicines will have time to do their hard work, too (some of which is pretty uncomfortable for you, I know). But keep up the good work. There are SO many people rooting for you and your family. Until next time,

    Love,

Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura

I've been remembering the fun we had this summer at Crystal Lake and hope that we can play hide and seek and duck duck goose sometime this summer. I love you and think about you a lot. • Hi Simon. This is one of your Sunday School teachers from church. I thought that you would like to know that on Sunday we made dream catchers from sticks and yarn. It was a lot of fun especially the part where Julia lost it and started yelling. She was pretty funny. Also I found a picture of you from when you came to our Sunday School last Fall. I didn't know I had it. So I put it on the bulletin board with everybody elses picture. There are 23 kids and 8 grown-up with their pictures there. I have another copy of your picture if you would like to have it. Everyone at Sunday school is waiting for you to get well so you can come back and be with us. That includes Ami, Fiona, Maranda, Eugene, Victor, Nathan, Eric, Catherine, Katherine, Julia, Alexander, Liam, Justin, William, Cully, Henry, Daniel, Kim, Margarite, Julia, Kyla, Zita, and Laura and a few more that I can't remember right now.

We hope you feel better soon and we love you. Quentin

So you like baking? That is fantastic! Whenever I can, I ask some of my students to help me bakecookies or cup cakes. Some of them are quite good cooks. I bet you would join my backing group if you were my student!
So, you lucky boy, Oma is visiting with you! Omas are very special, aren't they? Are you baking something special for her? Are you hugging and kissing her a lot? They love this kind of things! Omas also love to tell stories and to read books to us. Ask her, and she will be happy to satisfy you, you will see.
Simon, you have lots of people praying for you. Hang in there, my dear friend. You will feel better soon.
    Love,

  • Dear Simon:
Here is a riddle Noah likes to tell:
Q: What do you call a fish with no eyes?
    A: A Fsh-sh-sh
Q: What do you call a fish with 2 eyes?
    A: A fishi!!! (pronounce fishy)

Here's a little song we like here in Germany. Maybe you've heard it before?

This is a finger-play we like to do when a "tickle" is in order. Someone's fingers "walk up" your arm and then tickle under your chin while they say --
    (fingers start walking)
    Kommt ein Maeuslein
    Kriecht in Haeuslein
    Was will's suchen?
Kaesekuchen, Kaesekuchen, Kaesekuchen! (fingers start tickling with the first "Kaesekuchen"!)

We're routing for YOU, SIMON! You're our Gold Medal guy!

-Ruth Ann, John, Noah & Isaac

  • Hello Simon, I am so sorry to hear that you are not feeling so good this week. Last night I went to a performance at the Power Center called SamulNori, of Korean chanting, drumming and dancing. At the beginning of the show they had a special prayer song called a Binari.Audience members were invited to the altar on the stage with their prayers. I went up and lit some incense and said a special prayer for you. The altar was so beautiful with candles, fruits and treats. I hope you start to feel better soon. I am loving you. Gari

From the pictures you look like a cheerful young man that is full of energy. I am sure you are going to be fine. Think about the things you like and before you know it, you will be out of it.
Take care of yourself. We are praying for you.

  • Hi Simon. I'm a dad and I have a boy who is 5 years old. I bet he likes a lot of the same things you do. Recently we have been trying to look at the moon and stars with a telescope his grandma and grandpa got him. Sometimes there are too many clouds in the night sky to see anything. But we got our first glimpse of the moon just a couple days ago. It actually has all kinds of bumps and holes called craters. We also like BattleBots! Have you ever seen them on TV? People build robots and race each other to get through mazes and other hard stuff. Then in the end, the two best robots fight each other until there is one winner. We buold our own battle bots with lego's and have our own races and battles.

If you have a chance, next time your outside or out your window take a good look at the moon. There is alot of stuff there that you can't see but it is there, mountains and craters. Good Luck Simon!

I hope you believe in miracles because I know there are miracles out there for everyone. A few years ago, my little girl was very very sick because her heart was not working well. God smiled on our family and helped us find a new heart for her and she is now 22 years old and doing well. I pray you will be getting better soon. Take care.

  • simon & mariam,

I was looking at your web site and saw through the links that it's 30 degrees there right now. Thought I'd send you a bit of California Sunshine. We had rain and now a beautiful warm sunny sping day. The flowers are out on the plum trees, and the tulip magnolias and some daffadils are showing their heads. Thought you and your family could use some spring. Hope you are feeling stronger tomorrow and not having to use the "just in case bucket". We love you!!!!
My parents Rowan's Amma and Papa took off today on a big airplane back to China where we last saw your Nana and Grandpa Norm. It's so far away but when you know people there is feels close. Rowan sends you his kind of kisses...his favorite is stiking his nose in your ear. We also do eskimo kisses rubbing our noses together, and butterfly kisses with our eyelashes and my favorite rubbing our cheeks together. Try them. What's your favorite?

    love the Calif. Williams'

  • Hi Simon!
I just wanted to stop in and say hi. I'm afraid I don't have any more silly cat stories right now. : (

Did you watch the Olympics when you got home from the hospital? Do you like any winter sports? Did you see the speed skaters? 5 guys went out to race. One guy fell and then one guy tried to cheat and pull down the guy from the U.S. He made three of them fall. The guy from Australia was way in the back but because everyone else had fallen, he skated over the line first and won a medal! He was so happy. I guess he was teaching us to just keep on trying. (Oh, and the guy who tried to cheat was punished and the other two guys won medals too. So it isn't a good thing to cheat.)

Don't you love the sun today?

I hope you're feeling better than you were last week. I think about you every day and keep you in my prayers.

Talk to you again soon, Simon. : )

  • Hi Simon, my daughter, Justina, could be related to you and your sister. She has the same beautiful curly hair as you do/did. And she also had the beautiful "Mr/MS Clean" head. Next month will mark the five years since Justina was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. She had a rare form of NB because it triggered an autoimmune diseased called opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome. Can you pronunciate that? We just call it OMS. I bet you could make a funny rhyme with the words opsoclonus and myoclonus. Anyways... she went through the chemo shuffle and had a BMT at a place called City of Hope. Pretty appropriate name if you ask me. Although, you don't have to be at any one place to be filled with hope. With every breath we breathe, with every kiss we blow, with every wink we wink we express the hope that life is in progress and we are ALIVE. Simon, I send you cyber hugs and healing hope. Marion, I send you the strength to be the greatest cheerleader and the holder of the flame. Justina's brother and sister often wondered where their place was in this new routine. They wondered why Justina got so many presents, toys, and attention. It was very hard for them. I let them know that they were worth much more than all the letters and toys in the world. They understood that we all wished that we'd get a guarenteed cure in one of those packages and we realistically knew that each day we lived, smiled and said, "I love you"... we recieved that cure. Not a guarentee but, just a cure for THAT DAY. You Marion are best present and healing energy that you can give your brother.
Rub that lovely head for me and know that strangers ahead of the game are cheering you on.
    peace and bless be,
    The Korenko Family

  • Dear Simon,

You may not remember me but I was your Sunday school teacher at Christmas time when you were visiting your Grandparents in Oberlin. I went to High school with your mommy and your uncle David. Ialso have a little boy by the name of Dylan who is a little bit younger than you. I think that the two of you played together in the big house in the sunday school room. Anyway Dylan and I were thinking about you the other day, He wanted to know why you were sick and what could be done about it. Dylan has a condition called IgA deficiency. What this means is that he doesn't havr the good blood cells to fight off infections and so he gets really sick quite often, especially in the winter. He was just in the hospital for severe dehydration during the time you were having your last treatments. He goes to a special hospital once a month for them to give him a special medicine to help fight the nasty bad germs. He asked his doctor if this would work for you because he didn't want anybody else to be sick. When his doctor told him that this medicine was made especially for him he said he'd be willing to share it with you so that you could come back and play with him soon. We know that what Dylan goes through is relatively simple compared but we wanted you to know that there is another little person out here rooting for your recovery. By the way Dylans' favorite joke is: Why did the Easter Bunny cross the road?... Because the chicken took her eggs. Give our love and thoughts to your parents and Miriam hope you feel better soon, love Deidre, Bruce, Andrea, Bryan, Dylan, and Tyler Gargasz.

Been thinking about you does it feel funny to have so many people thinking about you. Can you feel warm fuzzies on your body from all the good thoughts. Rowan and I heard a funny joke this weekend from a 4 year old friend of his. Q: Why did the cookie go to the hospital? A: She was feeling kind of crummy. :)
You are a real trooper, the red white and blue machine sounded kind of cool. I thought your Mom was going to make some kind of patriotic joke, missed her chance. All the information is wonderful. Makes us all feel so much more connected to what you are going through. Hope your chemo today goes well. WE ALL LOVE YOU AND MARIAM HERE IN OAKLAND, EVEN KOFI AND ROWANS's AMMA AND PAPA WIRE WHO ARE VISITING FROM CHINA. We will celebrate Chinese New Years this week and think about you in the New Year of the Horse.

  • Hi Simon!
Thinking about you all the time. Hoping you've gotten your postcards from Vermont by now :) I miss your mom at work but I figure the best thing I can do for her right now is keep things going while she is away! I miss your surprise visits (after the library) to my office. (and the candy machine!) All of us at the office (Kristy, Devon, and Zubin and I) are hoping to come see you soon. (with presents!)

Until then... be well... and draw a lot! Art heals all souls.
    With love, Nancy

Here's a joke for you that our 5 year old neighbor shared with us yesterday:
"Where did all the cows go on vacation from the country?"
    "To MOO York City!"
Jolan celebrated her 7th birthday yesterday, and instead of cake, she decided to have make-your-own ice cream sundaes with her friends.
Please know that we're thinking of you and saying a special prayer that your week goes well.

  • Dear Simon, We are thinking of you often and are looking forward to seeing you up at Crystal Lake so you can go swimming. We want to get up to see you in your room in the hospital, but we have to find out from you Mom and Dad just when we can. When your Grandmother Ann comes up to see you she might stay with us or even with your grandfather Norm. We really enjoy keeping informed about you with the excellent coverage by both your mother and father. Please say hello to both your mother and father and just tell them to call us when they need some help. We know you are a real trooper and are being real brave in all the things you are having done. We love you and know you are getting better. It is fun reading all the messages that your friends and cousins are sending you. They all care about you very much and just know that you will be back playing with them in no time.

It's good to know the doctors are taking good care of you, and I'll be thinking of you next week when you go back to the hospital. Say "hi" to Miriam for me, and Gran and Grandad when they come again. Love and hugs, Jane Bishop

  • Hi everybody!

It's always fun to check in on this message board (even if the kids are asleep and it's just me...) We appreciate all the good thoughts and vigilance of those of you keeping up with us. Sometimes it's hard to find the moment we need to add new material, but we eventually get around to it. I seem to get to "What's Happening" and "Simon Says" once or twice per week. Markus works on adding photos from time to time.

Keep the good suggestions coming. Also, Simon has really enjoyed the jokes (he's a pretty wry guy), so keep them coming, too!

Here's one of our favorites, sent via regular mail by Kris Hopkins and family (the joke is attributed to her 7-year-old son).

What's black and white and black and white and green?

[Two zebras fighting over a pickle!]

Simon has had fun learning to tell that one, and creating numerous variations. In fact, *I* have had fun telling that one to *my* friends, too!

It is amazing to be on the receiving end of so much love, compassion, and concern. I find myself wishing we could all be this engaged with one another all the time! So, keep us in your thoughts and prayers, and spread your warm energies to others in your lives as well. It feels REALLY good to be so cared for!

I wanted you to know that I think about you a lot, even though you don't really know me, and I'm praying for you to feel better and get well. I really like your website...I like seeing your favorites and hearing how you're doing. Here's a hug from me...did you get it? Good!

I have been thinking a lot about you and all the stem cells harvest. I think it is fantastic the way that scientists are working on ways to eliminate "rebelious" cells from our bodies. Go for it, tough boy!
I hope by now all the 170 million stem cells were collected, and that very soon all the "rebelious" cells will be magnetaized out of your blood, and OUT OF YOU!
Simon, above all, have faith and be brave. God is with you!
    Say "Hi" to Miriam.

  • Dear Simon:

We love your web site. Who are we? I'm Julie, I've worked with your Mom since she first arrived at the University and I remember her bringing you to my office when you were first born. We are so sad that you have been sick and we can't wait for you to get better. We're reading about how you are on your web site. Joining me in sending you our love and greetings are my husband, Mark Creekmore, and my son, Peter Creekmore. We think of you and your family all the time.

Peter is a musician--he plays the jazz flute, and has just started college. He's in the jazz performance program at Rutgers in New Jersey, not far from New York. Sounds like Miriam is quite the budding musician in your family, right?

My son Peter has ordered a LARGE surprise stuffed animal for you (species to be revealed later) which will appear at your house in the very near future. I will phone to find out when it is convenient.

We have a new live animal in our lives--a dog. His name is Roscoe. We went to the Humane Society the day after Thanksgiving and brought him home. He is a brindle (sort of tiger striped) boxer with four white paws, a white chest, and a white stripe down his nose that swerves and runs down one side. He has floppy ears and a squished-up face, like a bulldog's. He loves to lick people--it's like being given a bath by someone with a large and very wet washcloth. He ended up in the Humane Society because he was part of a large group of dogs who were treated so badly by their owner that the police arrested him, and saved the dogs. So we got to adopt him.

It sounds as though your house got through the big ice storm without having any trees fall and without losing electricity. Thank goodness!

Love from us all to you and your family,

    Julie, Mark, Peter, and Roscoe

  • Hi Simon,
We check your website all the time, and are really happy the balls inside your body are getting smaller. That's great news!
Here in Cambridge, Maryland, the weather has been unusually warm and sunny. The birds and flowers are confused and think it is spring time already. BUT right now as I write this, it is blizzarding. Just a few minutes ago it was sunny and warm, and now it is snowing. I think not only the birds and flowers are confused, but now the people are confused. Perhaps the groundhog will stay in his hole for a few more months until spring has really arrived.
Thinking of groundhog day always reminds me of your great grandfather, "Gramp". He and your great grandmother, "Granny" would be some of your biggest cheerleaders. Eventhough they are not alive anymore, I think they are still praying for you.
We love you Simon, and your entire family. Keep strong and fighting off those infections. We are proud of you.
Love, Liddy, Martin, Justin and Jake

Jolan, Jenna, Mike and I went to a big waterfall near us today for a nice family hike. The gorge all around the waterfall had lots of ice from the spray that the waterfall makes, and it was fun to see. We couldn't stay too long, as we were getting some spray on us and it was CHILLY!
Please know that we (and many of our friends, family, and neighbors here) are keeping you in our prayers!
    Take care,

What great news to hear that the "balls" inside your body are getting smaller.
"YIPPEE! Way to go! Two thumbs up for Simon" says the Williams crowd. Would you do us a favor and tell your mom and dad that they are really great at explaining all of your treatments and procedures to us and we really appreciate them taking the time to tell us all about it.
It is hard for us to imagine you sledding on wierd ice snow 'cause it has been pretty warm and sunny here (and that is kind of weird for Seattle).

This is Marek, Lev's (and Jacob's) dad. I am glad to hear that you are home again. It was lovely of you to stop by and see Jacob the other day -- isn't he tiny? Thankyou for your suggestions for names for him. I like the name Samuel too (and of course Lev!), but in the end we thought he looked like a Jacob -- what do you think? We thought (for a moment) of calling him Robert because he was born on Robert Burns birthday -- who was a Scottish poet. He had lots of songs in his heart too! He even wrote one called 'To a Haggis' (which is a kind of Scottish sausage). It starts out:

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
    Great Chieftan o' the Puddin-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
    Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye worthy of a grace
    As lang's my arm.

Funny words, aren't they? I'll have to read them to you sometime so you hear what they sound like. He is saying that he thinks Haggis is the best kind of food!

Sid's a great guy with lots of wonderful friends, isn't he?

    See you soon,
    Marek

  • Hi Simon!
I'm so glad this hospital stay was short. I think you are very brave. I am not a good patient when I go to the hospital because I can't sleep but you sound like you do all the right things. Good for you!

It sounds like you had fun outside. What did you think about the wind and storm we had last night? Did you hear the ice melting as it got warmer? We have many trees around our house. When the ice fell off it made such a loud noice it woke me up!

Remember my last message I told you a story about our cat Whiskers? Well, here is another one. This happened this weekend...maybe when you were out playing because he was out playing too.
Whiskers is a great hunter. He is very smart and fast. But sometimes other animals are smarter than he is. I saw him watching a little chipmunk. I could tell he was trying to catch him. But do you know what that little chipmunk did? He found a big, black hose that was connected to the house and he ran in. Whiskers ran to the hose and sat there waiting for the chipmunk to come out. But you know what? That smart little chipmunk just sat there until Whiskers got bored and walked away. That's really using your brain, don't you think?

I see my friend Ellen has written to you. She lives in San Francisco and has two sons. I see from her message she told you to get well fast so you could come and visit her in San Francisco. That would be a fun trip because she is the BEST tour guide in the world!!! She knows all the best spots. I hope you get a chance to visit her.

Continue to be a good patient Simon. We are all thinking about you and praying for your good health. Until the next time.

    Deborah
