STORIES FOR SIMON
Simon's Story
by Sally Olson
Once upon a time there was a bird who could not fly. He used to be able to fly but now he couldn't. The doctors came and looked and poked and thought. Finally they said he had a broken wing. The doctors said that it would take a long while before he would be able to fly again. He would need special medicine and a lot of time to heal.
Well, the bird was kind of sad because he liked to fly and he missed it. The bird was also sometimes happy because he liked the doctors and the fun things he got to do at their hospital.
The bird wanted his mommy and daddy with him all the time. They held him and played with him and lifted him up while he could not fly.
His sister also played with him and sometimes bugged him and held his hand tight while he could not fly.
His cousin sent him cards that made him smile and cheered him up while he could not fly.
His friends gave him special toys and told him jokes and lifted his mood while he could not fly.
His grandpa showed him pictures of beautiful places and told him stories to lift his mind while he could not fly.
His grandma made him yummy food and rocked him in the rocking chair while he could not fly.
One day, he really, really wished he could fly again.
So, his mommy and his daddy and his sister and his cousin and his friends and his grandpa and his grandma all came and carried him around outside in the warm sunshine. They all played with him and made him laugh and lifted his spirits. For a little while, he really felt like he was flying.
Later, after all the medicine, all the rest, and all the waiting, the bird finally did fly again. He was slow at first but he did it, and all the while his mommy and his daddy and his sister and his cousin and his friends and his grandpa and his grandma were cheering!
