Are you interested in establishing an organization like MMDC on your campus?
The NMDP can supply you with the detailed information about how to organize the drive, who to contact, etc. They can be reached at
1-800-MARROW-2.
One of the most important pieces of information they will provide you is a small book called the Community Recruitment Guide. In it, you will find information about
- Organizing Your Recruitment Drive
- Fundraising/Contacting Media People
- Logistics / Volunteer needs
- Information about who can be a donor/medical screening instructions
At the University of Michigan, Minority Bone Marrow donor recruitment was originally
smaller, separate service projects run by Lambda Phi Epsilon (the national Asian-American Fraternity) and UAAMSA (the United Asian American Medical Student Association), and other
organizations on campus. The idea behind MMDC was to combine all of these separate efforts into one, campuswide coordinated effort.
One of the things that worked very well for us was to train and send speakers to the mass meetings of the campus minority groups explaining our goals and asking
for volunteers. As more volunteers joined, they in turn could be trained and sent out to speak in front of other groups, and further. In that way our message
spread.
