The MMDC 1998 Fall Camapaign: The Search For Life

We are gearing up for our annual major marrow registraiton campaign! This year's campaign is in collaboration with The Search For Life, a southeastern Michigan organization dedicated to increasing the number of minority registrants in the National Marrow Registry.

This year's campaign is aimed at trying to find matches for LaKeshia, an 11 year old girl from Ann Arbor with aplastic anemia, and Marc, the father of three small children from Detroit, who has CML. Time is running out for both of them, and thus we are launching our drive in coordination with others across the state.

        The dates and times are:

        Tuesday, Dec. 1st
        at Pierpont Commons

        Wendsday, Dec. 2nd
        at Michigan Union

        Thursday, Dec. 3rd
        at the Medical School

Want to do what we've done?

Are you interested in establishing an organization like MMDC on your campus?

The NMDP can supply you with the detailed information about how to organize the drive, who to contact, etc. They can be reached at 1-800-MARROW-2.

One of the most important pieces of information they will provide you is a small book called the Community Recruitment Guide. In it, you will find information about

          • Organizing Your Recruitment Drive
          • Fundraising/Contacting Media People
          • Logistics / Volunteer needs
          • Information about who can be a donor/medical screening instructions

At the University of Michigan, Minority Bone Marrow donor recruitment was originally smaller, separate service projects run by Lambda Phi Epsilon (the national Asian-American Fraternity) and UAAMSA (the United Asian American Medical Student Association), and other organizations on campus. The idea behind MMDC was to combine all of these separate efforts into one, campuswide coordinated effort.

One of the things that worked very well for us was to train and send speakers to the mass meetings of the campus minority groups explaining our goals and asking for volunteers. As more volunteers joined, they in turn could be trained and sent out to speak in front of other groups, and further. In that way our message spread.

More information will appear here as time progresses. For questions regarding our experience here at U of M, e-mail us and we'd be happy to help!

Last fall, all of us together added almost 400 people to the national registries.

Last fall, we gave 400 new chances for life to the world.

This winter, we added 197 lives to that figure.

We are currently working on getting the few ten thousand still out there... : )
