• Obtaining QuickTime for your Platform.

  If you have Netscape 3.0 then you may already have a QuickTime plug-in. Try running a QuickTime movie. If you don't have the plug-in, and your platform supports plug-ins, follow the instructions it provides on how to get the plug-in.

Java Help

• The movie doesn't run smoothly.

  The java movies all wait a certain number of milliseconds before displaying the next movie frame. If your machine is slow, or you're low on memory, the default wait period may be too small, and when this happens the frames are displayed in a "jerky" manner.

  To fix this, click on the options button and increase the delay setting. The delay is measured in milliseconds. Thus if you enter a delay of 1000, then the movie applet will display one frame a second.

• The movie runs too fast or slow.

  The java movies all wait a certain number of milliseconds before displaying the next movie frame. If the movie is too fast, you can click on the options button and increase the Delay setting. The delay is measured in milliseconds. Thus, if you enter a delay of 1000, then the movie applet will display one frame a second.

  Making the movie run faster, however, depends on how good your machine is. You can decrease the Delay, but if the machine is slow it won't make it run any faster. In fact, it may run slower, or it will run but the frames will be updated in a "jerky" manner.

Problems Common to both QuickTime and Java

• The movie doesn't fit in my browser's window.

  Your browser probably will let you hide tool bars and buttons so you will have enough space to view the movies.

  For netscape 3.0 or higher:
  

  1. Open the OPTIONS menu of Netscape, and there deactivate (i.e., turn off) the following three options:
     • Show toolbar.
     • Show locations.
     • Show directory buttons.
     This will make the window available for quicktime much larger.
  2. Make sure that your Netscape window is enlarged as much as your monitor allows to. The icon at the lower right corner of the window will allow you to maximize the available window size.
  3. Now you should be able to see the bottom of the window If all of this fails, just use a Mac with a larger screen (available at most University computer sites).
