Michigan Usenet News FAQ

When I try to log into Usenet News from home, it says: Connection Refused. Why?
To be able to use UofM's Usenet News service you must be logged into a machine with a Umich or Merit IP address. You may use the newsreaders tin and trn which are availible on machines in the login.itd.umich.edu pool if you would like to use the Usenet News service when off campus. An alternative way to read news would be to use the online service: groups.google.com

I want to read news in a group that isn't on the news server. What should I do?
Email usenet@umich.edu and include the name of the groups that you want to add in the email. If it is a group that already exists but isn't on our server, it will be added as soon as possible. If the group that you would like to have added is a new group and specific to the University (such as extracurricular groups), please post a message to umich.umce.usenet explaining the purpose of the group. You then must wait for 2 weeks to see if there is any objection to the group. If there is no objection, email usenet@umich.edu and it will be added to the server. For class groups, users may just email usenet@umich.edu and don't have to post to umich.umce.usenet.

Who can use the University's usenet news service?
Anyone who has a UofM Basic Computer Package can subscribe to usenet newsgroups as long as they are connecting from a UMich or Merit IP address or a Merit dialin connection.

There don't seem to be any articles in the clari.* hierarchy. Why?
You have to be connected through a dialup connection or on a UofM machine in order to read any of the clari.* newsgroups. This is because of licensing restrictions that clari is only availible on campus. You may read clari via the login servers if you are using the dialin service.

As of January, 2004, we have discontinued our subscription to the clari groups for financial reasons. The clari.* groups will be removed from our newsfeed in February of this year. More information is here.

How long do articles stay in the news groups?
Articles for class newsgroups stay in the groups for one semester. After the semester is over, all of the class newsgroups are reset. Any article in the rec.* hierarcy is in the group for about 3 days. The time that the rest of them stay around is variable. It is possible to save articles for future use with the newsreader tin.

I want to create a group in the alt.*, rec.*, clari.*, etc. hierarcy. How do I do that?
You need to post a message in the appropriate *.config group and then email usenet@umich.edu to tell us that the group has been created.

I want to read an article that was posted to a news group a long time ago. How would I go about doing that?
You can use the service: groups.google.com This will have all of the articles from any news hierarcy such as news.*, clari.*, alt.*, etc.
