Student-Faculty Symposium 2009

Youth Hope Organization hosted the first Student-Faculty Symposium: "Reconnecting Humanity" on October 8, 2009. The event brought together over 100 people, including local and international nonprofits and U-M students and professors. The topic for this event was "Eradicating World Poverty: A 21st Century Possibility". The symposium featured an introduction to the works of PROVIDES, Innoworks, Red Cross, and Circle K and a speech from Mr. Kimmie Weeks, director of Youth Action International, a nonprofit organization which provides funding for educational resources among other endeavors in several African countries. He drew on his personal experiences and journey to challenge the audience to become pioneers of change. Immediately following his speech, participants were given a chance to ask a panel of experts, specializing in the field of nonprofit work, questions. Members of the panel included Anthony Kofi Osei-Fosu, a visiting scholar from Ghana and a lecturer in economics, and Trina Shanks, a Rhodes scholarship recipient and an assistant lecturer from the School Social Work. The panel gave in-depth accounts of the issues affecting children throughout the world.
