The Dominican Republic is located on the eastern part of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, and borders Haiti. Its size is comparable to that of Vermont and New Hampshire combined. This country was initially explored by Columbus in 1492 during his first voyage. He named his discovery La Española and the country's capital, Santo Domingo, was later founded in 1496. Dominican Republic's capital is known to be the oldest European settlement in the Western hemisphere.
