Word Bingo
Objectives: Letter Recognition, Letter Naming, Word Construction, Vocabulary Building
Equipment: 3 Sets of Letters per child, Mat
       Area: Any flat surface area
       Number of Participants: 1+
       Grades: K-2

Having an adult or child as caller, letters will be randomly named at a set interval. When a letter is called, the child is to pick that letter out of the letters before him or her and set it on the mat.  The game is won when a child is able to construct a word using the letters before him or her on the mat.

The following games are from Simon Says . . . "Reading Is Fun!": Movement-Based Activities to Reinforce Beginning Reading Skills, written by Tabatha A. Uhrich and Monica McHale-Small:

ABC Order
Objectives: Alphabetic Sequencing, Letter Matching, Letter Recognition, Letter        Naming, Sound Matching, and Sound        Naming
Equipment: Alphabet Letter Cards (Two or more sets may be necessary.)
       Area: Classroom, Gymnasium, or Outdoors
       Number of Participants: 1+
       Grades: K-2

Place one letter of each of the letters of the alphabet in an area, and have students arrange the cards into the correct order. Students may work alone or in pairs or small groups. If desired, you can make the activity competitive by having the various pairs or groups race to beat the clock or one another.
Once the letters are assembled in the correct order, students can tell the name of each letter, the sound of each letter, name of the vowels, or state a word that begins with the letter or sound of selected alphabet letters.
Students can write each letter below the letter card, once arranged properly, to practice their own alphabet.

       Tracing with Chalk
Objective: Letter Copying, Letter Naming, Letter Recognition, Sound Matching, and        Sound Recognition
       Equipment: Jump Ropes and Chalk
       Area: Gymnasium or Outdoors
       Number of Participants: 1+
       Grades: K-5

Give each student a jump rope and a piece of chalk. Tell or show students a letter that they are to create using their ropes. You might give the sound of a letter and ask the students to create the letter that matches it. After the students create the letter with the rope, ask them to trace it with chalk. Next, they should be able to remove the rope and see the letter formed. Have them name the letter they have made and make its sound. Also, have students tell a word that starts with that letter.

       52 Pickup
Objectives: Alphabetic Sequencing, Letter Matching, Letter Recognition, Letter        Naming, Sound Naming, and Spelling
Equipment: Alphabet Letter Cards and Word Cards
Area: Classroom Hallway, Gymnasium, or Outdoors
       Number of Participants: 1+
       Grades: K-2

This game is just like the card game "52 Pickup." You or the students may toss Alphabet Letter Cards into the air, so they fall haphazardly to the floor. Have students run to a letter of choice, pick it up, and shout (or whisper or draw) the name of the letter. They may add the letter back to the pile of letters or bring it to you. The latter approach makes it easier for assessing what letters are known and which ones still need to be learned. You can ask students to find a given letter. You can make the sound of a letter and ask students to find the letter that matches the sound. You can show a letter and have a student find a match. You can show the uppercase version of a letter and ask the student to find its lowercase version, and vice versa. You can play the game using Word Cards, with the same type of variations mentioned.
