Purpose

This project seeks to enhance children's reading abilities in the areas of vocabulary, comprehension, and sentence structure. The project also aids adults in their understanding of how interactive technology can be used to teach these skills.

Methodology

The primary area of this site targets children aged three to five. As the children read about the adventures of three animals eager to travel to Alphabet Island , they encounter obstacles that require them to solve world puzzles or play word games to allow the characters to advance. The interactive stories are illustrated with Flash technology. The project utilizes age-appropriate narrative devices such as rhyme and alliteration to increase vocabulary, cultivate comprehension skills, and further develop children's ability to construct sentences. Upon completion of each story, children have the option to enter a game area where additional word games and puzzles reinforcing lessons presented in each story are available for them to play. The navigation of this area utilizes graphics from the stories and simple, age-appropriate language.

The secondary area of the site is intended for parents, teachers, and librarians. Divided into several sections, this area includes instruction pages on how to assist children in getting the most out of the interactive stories, games, and lessons learned from the website. There are also ideas for continuing activities that use the lessons, story ideas and characters from the website offline to continue children's education. Finally, a links page contains resources for further exploration, including a list of sites that feature articles on educating young children and techniques for instructing and enhancing reading skills. The navigation of this area continues the themes from the children's area, but is intended for adult users.
