A second-order irreversible reaction takes place in a nonideal, yet isothermal CSTR. The volume of the reactor is 1000 dm3, and the flow rate of the reactant stream is 1 dm3/s. At the temperature in the reactor, k = 0.005 dm3/mol/s. The concentration of A in the feed stream is 10 mol/dm3. the RTD is obtained from a tracer test on this reactor at the desired feed rate and reaction temperature. From the given RTD:
- Estimate the (1) maximum segregation and (2) minimum segregation (maximum mixedness) conversions that can be obtained from this reactor because of the different micromixing conditions that are possible.
- What conversions can be effected from the tanks-in-series model?
- What conversion can be effected by modeling this system as two CSTRs in parallel?
- Compare these conversions with those of a perfectly mixed CSTR and PFR of the same volume.
