Josephine Garis Conchran

Inventor of the Automatic Dishwasher

 

Josephine Garis Cochran was born in 1839, she grew up in Shelbyville (68). She was married to William A. Cochran, a civil servant (69). Cochran was one of the first and most famous of all female inventors. She died in 1913, 30 years after her husband had passed away (70). She and her husband are pictured below. The other photo is of their house in Shelbyville , Illinois as it stands today (71).
