Captain Frederick Pabst

The Inventor of Pabst Blue Ribbon

Frederick Pabst was born March 28, 1836 in Saxony, German (72). He moved to Chicago in 1848, and began to work at several different jobs (73). While working as a captain on a steamboat in 1844, he met Philip Best, the owner of a small but prosperous brewery in Milwaukee (74). He started to work with Best, and soon married Best's daughter Maria (75).

Pabst began to study the art of brewing and marketing and soon the company was producing 100,000 barrels a year (76). Soon after, Pabst took over the company (77).
