Mission and Goals of the Law Library

Excerpt from Mission of the Law Library:

The Law Librarys purpose is to build collections and provide services to support the teaching and research needs of Law School faculty and students.  Therefore, the Law Librarys collections, services, and policies are primarily designed to benefit the Law Schools faculty and students, and others officially connected with the Law School.

Library Tour Information

The Smith Additions primary function is as a study and research space.  Those studying and doing research need quiet.  Therefore, the Library discourages group tours except those which facilitate use of the Library as a place to do research.

The Law Library does have two self-guided tours on CD that patrons can take to familiarize themselves with the Law Library and with basic legal research:

The Law Library Orientation Tour leads Library patrons around the underground addition to the Law Library pointing out important collections and areas.  This tour also explains how to find materials in Lexcalibur, the University of Michigan Law Library online catalog.

The Legal Research Basics Tour leads Library patrons through a sample legal research problem. Within this framework, the Tour explains how to use basic legal resources including legal encyclopedias, digests, statute compilations, and A.L.Rs.  There are also additional sections on using Shepard's Citations and basic treaty research.

Both tours can be picked up at the Circulation desk on Sub-2 and both tours have handouts to ease navigation and elucidate basic concepts.

Lost & Found

Lost and Found for items left in the Law Library is in the Administrative Office, S-180, open 8 a.m. to Noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Please come in person rather than calling.

Library staff bring found items to the Administrative Office, but it may take a day or so for that to happen.

Items of value (wallets, purses, computers, jewelry, etc.) are kept in the Administrative Office until the Department of Safety picks them up; from where they can be claimed.

Other places where you can check for lost items include:

Reading Room Lost and Found, 764-1358

Law School lost and found, 300 Hutchins Hall

Department of Safety, 763-1131. Kipke Drive

        Lawyers Club Desk, 764-1112

Any other building where you might have left your object.  Most buildings have a lost and found.  Many, after a brief period, turn items over to the Department of Safety.
